Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is the standardised language used on engineering drawings.
GD&T is defined by two parallel standards: ASME Y14.5 and ISO 1101.
Why GD&T Matters
A simple ± tolerance on an X or Y coordinate does not fully describe how a feature must behave in an assembly.
- Coordinate tolerances create a square tolerance zone.
Reading a Feature Control Frame
GD&T controls are communicated through a feature control frame.
Example: ⊕ | ⌀0.1 | A | B means: True Position, cylindrical tolerance zone of ⌀0.1mm.
